Quilts of Valor - The History

Quilts of Valor foundation began in 2003 with a dream. Delaware resident and founder Catherine Roberts’ son was deployed in Iraq. Her dream was of a young man in a state of utter despair. The next scene found him wrapped in a quilt, changing his demeanor to one of hope and well-being. And Quilts of Valor Foundation was born. Little did Catherine know then that it would become a nationwide community of 10,000 dedicated volunteers who have awarded nearly 500,000 quilts to those touched by war. Imbedded in the award ceremony is the “wrapping” with a quilt.

As the organization took off, Catherine enlisted Lenny Truitt of Delmarvalous Quilters to assist with administrative details, which she did for many years. Lenny, in turn, encouraged Delmarvalous Quilters to participate. Members were thrilled to be able to show their gratitude to veterans in a tangible way, doing what they do best. Throughout the year, blocks are collected and assembled. Once a year, a sew day is held at the guild meeting room. To date, since actual records were kept, Delmarvalous has donated 345 quilts to the Quilts of Valor Foundation.
